Although I teach first, I think this idea could work well for third too.

During August and September we do not write stories or papers. We only focus on writing quality detailed sentences. I don't want to know that, "A cat sat". . . I want to know what color cat is, where it sat, what it sat on, etc. We slowly build over these months and then we start working on tying sentences together and "explaining further." Soon they are writing great little stories. My first year of teaching I got pressure from the principal to "jump in" and get going, but I found that when I slow down and start with the basics things work out much better (and much more quickly). The principal left me alone when I started producing better writers :)

Step up to Writing is a rockin' program. It breaks down the writing process for kiddos, color codes each section, and is easy to use. It changed me as a writing teacher. Look into it if you can.

Have a wonderful summer and pop over for a visit if you get a chance. I am hosting my first Linky Party and would love for you to join in the fun.

Kelley Dolling
Teacher Idea FactoryKelley Dollinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06533328861259756995noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-905077164173256865.post-9620763420134311972012-05-25T08:59:50.633-04:002012-05-25T08:59:50.633-04:00Hi Brittany!
Congratulations on finishing school ...Hi Brittany!

Congratulations on finishing school for the year! I am a Grade 3 teacher in Australia, so still have 6 months of our school year to go....

I was reading through your last post, I am so glad you mentioned the Daily 5! I LOVE the Daily 5 - it works so well.... You have less to plan, more time to concentrate on small group teaching and the kids LOVE it! Because of our timetable we can only do it 3 days a week, and they are always looking forward to it! There are some great resources out there, but read the book first and then I can tell you what I am doing and you can search other blogs! I love this post http://3rdgradesahoot.blogspot.com.au/2012/01/daily-5-work-on-words-and-freebies.html

This is my class blog http://bjcmissh.global2.vic.edu.au/ and I do have a section about the Daily 5 if that helps!

I am your newest follower on TpT! Good luck and enjoy the start of your holidays - I hope you can recover from your sickness now!

Alison
mathswithmeaning.blogspot.com.auAlison Hislophttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14933899377107104170noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-905077164173256865.post-69600866628372746302012-05-25T02:58:44.818-04:002012-05-25T02:58:44.818-04:00I need to work on organizing and planning as well....I need to work on organizing and planning as well. This has been my first year teaching my own classroom, and while I don't feel I did as well as I could have, I am already looking and planning for next year to make things a lot better!

Shelley at Rhymes With Purple
http://purplepolkladots.blogspot.comShelley L.
