When the students are finished with the day's writing assignment they can pick something from each of these pockets to write about. The top pocket is a genre and the second pocket is a topic. I am going to let my kids add some personalized topics to the second pocket after we make the writing offices. Here is a closer look at these pockets.

I love this, and I'm definitely doing this with my 2nd grade class! Thanks so much for sharing! Can you publish/make a new "no excuses word list" that doesn't have the first column capitalized? I'm afraid my students would copy down exactly what they see!
